When Understanding Reaches Its Limit
I have always been someone who seeks understanding. I ask questions. I analyze. I try to connect the dots. Maybe that's part of being human. Maybe it's part of carrying a tender heart through a broken world.
But there are moments when understanding reaches its limit.
When someone dies unexpectedly. When suffering seems unfair. When prayers appear unanswered. When the weight of grief settles in and all we can ask is, "Why?"
I don't believe every painful thing that happens is good. There is evil in this world. There is heartbreak. There are consequences of living in a fallen creation.
Yet I also believe that God is not absent from those places.
Scripture reminds us that God can bring good out of what was meant for evil. (Genesis 50:20; Romans 8:28)
It doesn't erase the pain. It doesn't make the loss insignificant. It doesn't mean we shouldn't grieve.
It simply means that grief does not get the final word.
I may never understand why certain things happen. I am not the Author of the story. I do not see the beginning and the end at the same time. I cannot trace every thread through generations or comprehend how every choice, every loss, and every act of love intersects with eternity.
But God can.
He sees what I cannot see.
He knows the past completely, understands the present perfectly, and holds the future securely. He knows the lessons that suffering may teach, the compassion that pain may cultivate, the lives that may be changed because one person chose to persevere instead of surrender to despair.
Sometimes the greatest act of faith is not finding the answer.
Sometimes it is trusting that the One who holds the whole story is wiser than the characters living within it.
I can grieve and still trust.
I can ask questions and still believe.
I can acknowledge my pain without assigning blame to God.
Because while I may not understand everything, I know the character of the One who does.
Isaiah 55:8–9 (NKJV)
For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways, says the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
